us are watching this tonight. the first in the presidential debates in this election cycle between president barack obama and former massachusetts governor mitt romney. the stage is ready in denver, colorado. the university of denver. and all of the expectations management to the contrary, the two men you're going to see tonight are very good debaters. they have four ivy league degrees between them, after all, and 50 debates between them, though not against each other until tonight. there is a critical third man on that stage tonight in denver. that's the moderator, jim lehrer of pbs. he's done a dozen of these. and the rules, which he will announce at the start, give him broad leeway to guide the conversation and the debate. it is a cold room in denver. the campaigns wanted the temperature low. and it's not likely to stay that way once we get under way. both men have been prepping for days. this happens to be the obamas' 20th wedding anniversary. moments ago we saw a warm embrace between mrs. romney and mrs. obama. they both met each other at the front of the hall. their hiss, thi

after a week debate. >> september's unemployment rate delivered president obama a pre-election gift. this is the first time it has been below 8% during his presidency. >> we know there is still that willingness for all of us to see that more people are put but to work. in this particular report, i am happy to see that we have continued growth. >> employers added 114,000 jobs in september. the numbers shocked analysts, who predicted the jobless rate would stay around 8% and possibly grow. >> this is a big report. >> president obama called the report proved that the economy is improving under his policies. >> we have made too much product progress to return to the policies that led to the crisis in the first place. >> mitt romney launched a tv ad that the recovery is too slow. even economists seem hesitant, pointing of the the number of new jobs created each month has been decreasing since july. this report a positive sign for a still fragile of economy. one downside to the report, many of the jobs created were part- time jobs, not full-time jobs. >> thank you, daniel. baltimore count

, president obama, hasn't made his case and that his record isn't enough for re-election, and i'm not going to give you all the detail of what i'll do, what a romney presidency would mean. make your choice based on the president. that's the plan? >> no, no. listen, what the plan is that the public will have plenty of detail and information to be able to make a judgment on governor romney and what his plan is for the future. but let's look at what the president is saying as well. and you're right, david, in this respect. the president has had four years to lay this out, and now a campaign. and the president's just trying to run out the clock. he desperately wants to run out the clock with platitudes which sound nice, and i give him that. the president is very good at that. but in the end, i think that both sides have to look at this campaign and say, what are we going to lay out over the next 36 days? and i think that's really important. and i think governor romney will lay out some very important points over the next 36 days that will make people believe once and for all that america

two numbers that matter more when judging whether a president wins re-election or not. for the president right now, his job approval rating is at 49%. disapproval at 48. our pollsters tell us that 49 is in the re-elect zone. look at this, the direction of the country, 40% say we're on the right track. it's not a great number, but it's the highest number we've recorded in three and a half years. let's move to the head-to-head with mitt romney. the president's number is steady at 49. mitt romney has picked up a couple in the last couple weeks, sits at 46. what's helping him? republican voters more enthusiastic, they make it through the likely voter screen. it's been a couple tough weeks for mitt romney. that 47% mark has left a mark, if you will. is there anything you've heard that's made you more or less favorable on mitt romney, 54% say what they've heard has made them less favorable. that said, the president has a couple things not going for him on the issue of libya and egypt. more people disapprove of how he's handled the situation than approve. why is the president in a kma
